Pleased, Dana hit the up-arrow button to send the text message.

“There,” she said. “That’s taken care of!” She looked at Kong, then cupped his face. “What’s the worst that could happen?”

CHAPTER 33

The following day, Dana and Bradley awoke early to pack the car for their trip. While Bradley was loading up, Dana wrote a note for Sheila with instructions for caring for Kong, including his rehabilitation sessions on the Konginator 2000. She hated leaving him behind, but she felt a long car ride could exacerbate his leg. She patted his head and closed the door behind her as she joined Bradley in the car, ready to begin their nearly 7-hour drive to Long Beach.

They hit the 101 and headed south, through cute towns like Shell Beach and Spyglass, passing immense homes and boutique shops in Montecito and Santa Barbara. Once they reached Thousand Oaks and Calabasas, the Santa Monica Mountains loomed to their right, the Pacific Ocean just beyond the smooth peaks, where beachside hamlets like Malibu and Point Dume awaited.

Dana saw a sign that read ‘Antelope Valley 86 miles’

“Oh, I wish we were closer,” she said.

“Why’s that?” he asked.

“The Poppy reserve!” she said, as if he should know.

“The…”

“…Poppy reserve! Millions and millions of California poppies bloom every year. As far as the eyes can see. It’s spectacular.”

“You and your poppies,” Bradley chuckled.

“Yeah, I do love them. They’re special to me and…” Her hand went to her shirt, where she could feel the poppy necklace underneath. Alicia.

“And?”

“Huh?”

“You sounded like you were going to say something else,” he prodded.

“Oh. Nothing.” She turned away. She saw another sign. ‘Long Beach 60 miles’

“Look. Not much further,” she said, closing the subject.

She turned her head and looked at the passing landscape.

In Sherman Oaks, they merged south onto Interstate 405. A little over an hour later, Dana spotted The Queen Mary moored in the Los Angeles River.

Bradley followed the signs to the Catalina Landing in downtown Long Beach. Once he spotted the Aquarium, he went another couple of blocks, then turned into the lot and parked. They carried their duffle bags to the Catalina Express ferry and boarded. The ferry was heading to Avalon on Catalina Island, and the ride was about an hour long. Dana and Bradley found two side-by-side seats at a small table.

“Do you want the seat by the window?” he asked her. “Great views of the water.”

“Uh, no thanks,” Dana said apprehensively. “You take it.”

“Don’t mind if I do,” Bradley said, taking the chair.

After a small wait, the ferry began its journey to the island.

An announcer’s voice came over the speakers.

“Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Dave Mathews – no, not that Dave Mathews (laughter) - and I’d like to welcome you aboard the Catalina Express ferry.
